Hugh McAdams who lived at Back Creek on the Haw River was a wealthy land owner. A portions of his holdings was known as Robson Place. He is first found in Orange Co. on the 1776 elections list and Capt. Tate's Company list. He was appointed constable in 1779. Hugh was drafted into service for the American Cause, but his son, John served for him. Hugh supported the American cause and pay records show him furnishing supplies to the American troops. He married more than once. His widow, Catey Beard whom he married, 3 Jan 1803. was still living in 1820. He first married Catherine Scott, d/o John Scott, 11 Sept. 1761, in Lunenburg Co., Va. He made his will on 3 Jan. 1809 and named 12 children. Most of Hugh's children remained in Orange County area. Later in life, Hugh sold Robson Place to his son, William.

Joseph McAdams

Dr. Joseph McAdams and his wife, Janet Muir lived in St. Stephens Parish, Northumberland Co., VA. During the late 1760's in numerous parishes across Virginia, Militia's were being formed to fight Indians. This era in Virginia included Dr. Joseph McAdams as a participant. The Indians who decided to fight the Colonist, decided the Colonist were taking too much of their land and game animals which roamed freely in Virginia in the Colonia era. After Joseph died, his bible was found and in it is listed the names and births of his children.

Dr. Joseph McAdams, Sr., born abt. 1686 in Scotland, migrated and lived in Northumberland Co., Va. where he served as a Surgeon to ships and naval personnel in 1776 during the American Revolution. It is likely that he served aboard the American Ship 'Defense' with his son, John during the war. Joseph had reached his 80's by now and died in 1777. Land which was promiosed to Joseph for his service to the country was claimed by his heirs. He married Janet Muir. Ref/ Virginians in the Rev.

John McAdams

John McAdams' father Hugh was drafted into the service of the Revolutionary War, but John Served the time for him. His father served the Colonial American Troops throughout the War. John McAdams was a substitute for his father, Hugh who had been drafted for 3 months service. He served as a private with Capt. Horton, Major Justice, and Col. Lyttle in the command of General Bulter. He was at the battle of Camden in Aug. 1780. He volunteered for another 5 months under the same officers who engaged the Tories at Cross Cress. He received a pension and placed on the rolls of West Tenn. He married Nancy Morrow and died in Nashville. Nat. Archives S-2762

In 1789 John McAdams and Nancy Morrow McAdams moved to Nashville, Tenn where records can be found of them.
